Health and Safety Ontario Content Management Project

Background

In response to economic challenges and the need to improve health and safety outcomes, the Ontario Prevention System recently restructured its programs and services, and the way it delivers them. As a result of these changes, 12 of the province’s Health and Safety Associations have amalgamated to form four new organizations. These new organizations include Infrastructure Health & Safety Association (IHSA), Public Services Health & Safety Association (PSHSA), Workplace Safety North (WSN) and Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS).

The Challenge

The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) Business Case for Change (2009) recommends employers enter the prevention system through one website, and navigate from there to more sector-specific solutions. The Health & Safety Ontario (HSO) website was launched in May 2010 as a common gateway for servicing clients, partners and stakeholders.

While the current website has worked well, a new architecture was needed to enable the efficient delivery of new content, applications and business models.

The Solution

Our team provided the analysis and design of a new information architecture for the site. The web site architecture was based on the ASP.NET platform using a Content Management System (CMS). The CMS product used was Kentico CMS. The web site included an online community to facilitate the exchange of information and knowledge among site users, a critical aspect of the HSO strategy. ZyTechSoft also developed a custom CMS module to build and publish assessments (surveys) for HSO users to be able to evaluate their workplace safety measures.

Kodiak US Expansion Project

Background

Currently celebrating its centennial anniversary Kodiak remains one of Canada’s most enduring and cherished footwear brands. Based in Cambridge, Ontario and operating a manufacturing facility in Harbour Grace, NL, it produces the high-end Terra and Kodiak brands. The company’s products exceed Canadian, European and American safety standards and are highly regarded for their quality. The company is also an official supplier to the Department of National Defense and produces a range of military and police footwear. Kodiak Group Holdings Co. is an affiliate company of Williamson Dickie Mfg. Co. of Fort Worth, TX.

The Challenge

Kodiak, under the Dickie's brand, was extending their operation into the US market. The expansion required Kodiak to build an infrastructure to exchange electronic transactions with US retailers.

The Solution

ZyTechSoft's team used Microsoft BizTalk Server 2009, Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) and the BizTalk ESB Toolkit to build an Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) solution that allows Kodiak to the retailers with their internal ERP and warehouse management systems.

Purolator Rural Delivery Integration Project

Background

Purolator is the largest courier company in Canada. Purolator delivers services and solutions critical to Canada’s busiest urban centres. From timely, dependable package delivery to integrated distribution solutions, Purolator has the size, experience and expertise to meet the sophisticated, high-volume demands of large urban centres and deliver competitive advantage.

The Challenge

Purolator partners with other couriers in Canada and in other countries around the world to extend their delivery services to rural or remote locations. Purolator wanted a flexible solution to be able to exchange tracking information with a variety of partners. The tracking information had to be normalized and ultimately integrated into Purolator's tracking and reporting systems.

The Solution

The architecture implemented by our team was based on an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) solution. The solution significantly cuts down the time it takes Purolator to add new partners and minimizes development and maintenance costs.

ZyTechSoft used Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006 and a customized version of the BizTalk ESB Toolkit to develop a highly flexible solution that also included performance tuning, error recovery and monitoring tools.

IAPA e-Business Integration System (eBIS)

Background

The Industrial Accident Prevention Association (IAPA) is a not-for-profit, member-driven organization operating in the Province of Ontario since 1917. Representing more than 50,000 member firms and more than 1.5 million workers, IAPA is Canada’s largest health and safety organization and has taken a leading role in the prevention of workplace injury and illness, working for improvement in the health and safety performance of their member firms.

The Challenge

Over the past few years IAPA external web presence grew to several sites with different corporate guidelines for navigation, content, and branding. The existing solution lacked the flexibility required for integrating information from different external partners. IAPA wanted to create a platform for the sale and delivery of new digital product and services and reduce the time-to-market for those offerings.

The Solution

ZyTechSoft worked closely with IAPA to develop a new e-commerce platform to replace their existing web based ordering system and establish a scalable, available, e-Business Integration platform to enable disparate existing and future systems to communicate and interact. The new system facilitates the payment process by offering users the ability to use VISA or MasterCard, or other traditional methods of payment. This secure method of payment uses Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption and HTTP Authentication technology to ensure the security of online transactions.

Using Microsoft technologies such as ASP.NET 3.5, AJAX, SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio 2008, Search Server, Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) and Telerik RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX, ZyTechSoft deployed a new a e-commerce platform that was engineered to integrate directly with partners and designed to increase the effectiveness of IAPA's offerings.

This new platform resulted in:

Customer Service Integration Solution for City of Brampton

Background

In 1974, the Region of Peel was created and Brampton became a city. Large-scale and leading-edge industries are located in Brampton. In the 1980s and 1990s, large subdivisions developed on lands formerly used for farming. Brampton is among the largest urban centres in Canada with a population of over 450,000 people.

The Challenge

The City of Brampton was upgrading their work management system (Hansen). The customer service department would be running the existing version of Hansen, while the workers on the field would run the new version. The city had to run both versions side-by-side while all areas were transitioned to the new version. Since the city was already using iWay as their middleware technology, they preferred a solution that would integrate seamlessly with iWay.

The Solution

ZyTechSoft developed a service oriented solution to bridge service requests from an older version of Hansen to the new version of the system. We choose Microsoft .NET for the tools it offered, which would enable us to develop a custom integration solution with a quick development schedule, and allow the city to reduce operating costs.

The service oriented solution was developed using Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, Web Services Software Factory, Enterprise Library 3.1 and Oracle 10g.

Enterprise Application Integration Solution for the Region of Halton

Background

The Halton Region was incorporated in 1974 by the Province of Ontario. Halton covers over 232,000 acres of land (967 square km), including a 25-km frontage onto Lake Ontario. The approximate population of Halton Region in 2008 was 467,200. The Region of Halton includes the local municipalities of: Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville.

The Challenge

The Region of Halton deployed a new work management system (Hansen) in their Public Works department. The work management system would need to integrate with the financial, material management and time management systems running on SAP. In addition, the region's customer management system, running on Siebel, would need access to the customer information stored in Hansen.

The Solution

The Halton region had chosen Microsoft Biztalk Server 2006 R2 as their integration tool. We developed interfaces for SAP financials, material management and time management modules, and for their Siebel based customer management system.

ZyTechSoft also delivered an Intranet portal to facilitate the monitoring of the integration process. The portal was based on the Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) Biztalk components and developed using Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0 and Telerik RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX.
